We have officially made it to warm weather, lighter nights and sunnier days. Bring on Spring baby! And specifically, spring activities and one of my absolute favorites: picnics! Planning the perfect Spring picnic with toddlers can be tricky but not impossible.
Spring is the time when the flowers come out, sundresses reappear and it just feels like we should be outside more.
Now that Tate’s a little older, our toolbox of outdoor activities has grown as well and one of my favorite things to do with him is take an old blanket, some food, some toys and have a picnic.
Being as though he is a busy boy, it is easily one of the best ways for him to burn off some energy and get us both some Vitamin D at the same time. And with Babyganics SPF 50+ Sunscreen Lotion from Publix, getting him ample outside time is not a worry. This cruelty free product allows us to stay outside for hours while also caring for his skin and helping to protect him from the harmful rays of the direct sun (don’t forget his sun hat!). It’s a win win for both of us!
Planning a picnic is not a difficult task. I mean food and blankets is all that’s really needed… unless you’re a mom of a toddler, then that list can get a bit longer.
So I’m here to help you out.
Here are my 3 must-haves for planning the perfect spring picnic with toddlers:
- Food. Okay yes this is a given but let’s be honest with picky toddler mood swings, the weather outside or even the distance of the picnic location, food can sometimes get a little tricky. My biggest tip: keep it simple. Pack their go-to favorite snacks so you know they won’t turn them down. Keeping it simple allows you to pick foods that won’t melt if it’s hot or at a further location or picking something too cold if it’s a little on the chillier side. You know what they say, simplicity is best.
- Blankets. Probably won’t need much help on this one, but this was still a necessity for the list. A blankets’ a blanket right? Wrong. And unfortunately I’ve learned this the hard way. Picnics are usually on the ground and pick one with not enough cushion and your rear end will scream at you the rest of the day or pick one with too much padding and you could quite possibly be ruining the best blanket you own. Find a middle ground! My second tip regarding this is to let your toddler help! The last thing you need is a “toddler melt down” because you chose the blue blanket and not the white one like they expected you to read their mind and just know they wanted. Grab a few blankets and let your child choose which one they want to bring to the picnic. It’s a great way to fuel their autonomy and protect your sanity in the long run.
- Protection. I know you’re thinking protection? It’s just a picnic not underwater sword fighting, but what I mean is protection from the outdoor elements. On one of our first mommy and son picnics I took Tate to the park and completely forgot the bug spray or sunscreen. Let’s just say it was a very long night after. Bug spray is an absolute must. Babyganics Natural Insect Repellent Pump Spray and Babyganics SPF 50+ Sunscreen Lotion are the perfect products to get the job done. With its plant-based and other carefully crafted ingredients and the fact that it’s made without parabens, phthalates or aluminum; this product is absolutely designed with kids in mind. This product is a staple in our household and one I absolutely recommend to any mom upon ask. Each time before our picnic days, I head online to Publix and grab both of these items to be adequately prepared for our day! Our first picnic may have been done with trial and error but every once since has been a hit out the park.
The struggle is real if you’re a mama. But Springtime brings the perfect mix to getting these kids outdoors and creating some fun for both you and them. With these 3 must-haves tips for planning the perfect spring picnic with toddlers, you are off to a great Spring start!
